Signals of Life: AI and Biomedical Innovations for Human Wellbeing
Signals of Life: AI and Biomedical Innovations for Human Well-being explores how artificial intelligence (AI) revolutionises the field of biomedical engineering, with a special focus on the analysis of physiological signals such as electrocardiography (ECG), electroencephalography (EEG), and electromyography (EMG). These signals, often called the body’s internal language, carry important information about a person’s health, body function, and possible illnesses. Using AI to analyse these signals in real time opens new opportunities for better diagnosis, continuous monitoring, rehabilitation, and more personalised healthcare.
The book begins with foundational concepts in physiological signal acquisition, emphasising non-invasive, wearable, and real-time monitoring systems. It then delves into AI-powered signal processing techniques that enhance the extraction of meaningful patterns from raw biosignals. Through practical case studies drawn from my research, the book demonstrates how AI can solve real-world health challenges, ranging from intelligent prosthetic hand control and fatigue detection in athletes and industrial workers to fall detection systems for older adults and early identification of neurological disorders.
In addition to technical insights, the book addresses AI’s ethical, societal, and policy dimensions in healthcare. Topics such as data privacy, algorithmic fairness, human-AI collaboration, and regulatory challenges are critically discussed to ensure these innovations are impactful and responsible.
The final chapters look ahead, exploring emerging frontiers such as generative AI, digital twins, edge computing, and federated learning. These technologies are set to redefine how we understand, monitor, and enhance human health, paving the way for more inclusive and intelligent healthcare systems. This book is intended for students, researchers, clinicians, and anyone interested in the future of health technology. It aims to inform and inspire innovation at the intersection of engineering, AI, and human well-being.
